What is Book Art, and what are Artist Books?
What is Book Art?
Book Art, a relatively new art form with historic roots, is an approach in which the form of the book is as important as the content. In he traditional book form, the book itself is a container for the content – the images or text contained within it. Book Art is considered by the artist to be pieces in which the entire book – its form and content – comprise entirely the art piece itself. The book may contain a narrative or not; may include text or images, cloth, metal, glass, paper, or sound elements.
The definition of what is book art is considered within the Book Art community to lie largely within the eyes of the artist. For me, it’s the most exciting form of art I’ve ever encountered, as there as really no rules, not limits. It’s an amazing, wide open field, with book artists whose original field was architecture, print making, painting, writing, photography (like myself), or even field outside of the arts altogether.
The main thread that ties most pieces of Book Art together is their ‘touchability’. These are usually one of a kind pieces of art that are meant to be touched and handled by the user, and are thus a direct contact between the artist and the user. The books can be provocative, funny, whimsical, or simply beautiful, but largely they are such a beautiful, direct experience between user and maker. This is one of the things I love the most.
Book Art, at present, is largely collected within Special Collections divisions of Universities and private collectors.
For me, I discovered Book Art in 2014. Like many people, I had never heard of the field, though I’ve been involved in the arts most of my life. I thought, when I heard of it, that “Book Art”, or “Artist Books”, would be a coffee table collection of images of a given artist’s work. No. It is so, so much more.
Here are a few of my most recent pieces.

What is a Waiting Book?
What is a Waiting Book?
Waiting Books are what I consider to be the state of books that have an openness, and are blank and waiting for their new owner to take them home and make them their own. These books have their form, but are awaiting your content. Writing, images, ephemera… these are perfect for journals, diaries, planners, art journals, or sketch pads.
